Pitch Perfect Workshop

Pitch Perfect

sell-that-book-cover

Pitch Perfect is a 1-hour workshop led by author and Literary Agency PR Manager, Colleen Oefelein (pen name CM McCoy). This workshop is an offshoot of Colleen’s SELL THAT BOOK, an Author’s Guide to Book Promotion.

In this workshop, authors learn the anatomy of a pitch, see successful pitch examples (from queries, in-person pitches, and TV interviews), and craft their own book pitch in this high-energy, interactive workshop. The session kicks off with a fun, interactive post-it-note game to get the creative juices flowing and segues into a tutorial on “how to talk about your book.” With a mock pitch-session/talk-show to wrap things up, those who wish to practice their pitch get an opportunity to do so and receive personal feedback from me and the other participants.

Today, a successful author is equal parts great writer and great promoter. Whether they’re selling their book to an agent, a reviewer, an individual reader on social media or a TV audience during a morning news show,  authors need to know how to describe their book with a hard-hitting and memorable pitch.

Session Marketing Description:

Cook your manuscript down to its juiciest bits and tantalize your audience. Craft the perfect hook to sell your book to agents, editors, reviewers, and readers.

Colleen’s Bio:

CM McCoy is well aware nobody can say or spell her last name, hence the pen name. You can call her Colleen. She’s published in YA and is the PR manager for Inklings Literary Agency. She’s been interviewed by PEOPLE Magazine, appeared on ABC’s 20/20, and booked appearances on Alaska’s local news morning shows. She’s read hundreds of queries and taken pitches for an agent at writer’s conferences, but she vividly remembers the anxiety and uncertainty on the other side of the aisle–after all, it was only two years ago that she was a querying and pitching author herself. Now she mentors pre-published authors in contests such as #FicFest and #QueryKombat. Her debut novel, EERIE, a YA paranormal set in Alaska, was published in Dec 2015 by Omnific/Simon & Schuster. She holds a BS in both Chemical Engineering and German, flies helicopters, and (if you feed her enough whiskey) Irish dances.

Take-aways:

Attendees will craft a pitch for their book, one they can use when answering that ubiquitous prompt: so, tell me about your book. Writers will learn how to approach and speak to readers, reviewers, agents, and/or editors. Attendees receive an emailed pdf file of PITCH TIPS, which includes tips for pitching to agents/editors, pitching in online pitch contests, and (for published authors) pitching to readers and reviewers. Colleen also gives away a copy of either SAVE THE CAT or THE KICK ASS WRITER during the workshop.
